Mazda CX-5 and CX-90 rear seats: Backseat Comfort Isn’t an Afterthought

Mazda continues to challenge convention by reimagining comfort and practicality for all passengers, not just those in the front seat. Take Mazda CX-5 and CX-90, for example—two distinct approaches to solving the often-overlooked issue of rear seat comfort. At a time when even large SUVs tend to compromise second-row space for cargo capacity, Mazda ensures back-seat passengers are not an afterthought. Especially in the CX-90 model, where the back row is not just an additional space, but a full-fledged comfort zone designed for adult passengers.

In the CX-90, the manufacturer abandoned the universal folding mechanism in favor of a monolithic design with a fixed backrest. This architecture has made it possible to maintain the depth of the seat cushion, which directly affects hip support and ergonomics of the fit. This is especially important for people over 180 cm tall, the legs do not hang, the spine does not overload, and the backrest supports the lower back at the correct angle. As a result, there is less fatigue even after an hour-long trip.

Compared to the CX-90, the CX-5 offers a more compromise solution:

The seats remain folding to provide access to the luggage compartment and configuration variability. But even here it is clear that Mazda engineers have tried to preserve the quality of the cushion and the angle of the backrest. Considering that the CX-5 does not have a long wheelbase like the CX-90, the reclining solution still looks good, the seat height is balanced, the floor is not too raised, and the head restraints retain sufficient support.

It is worth noting that Mazda does not focus on heated and massaged captain’s chairs, as some premium brands do. However, in the CX-90, the rear row is really convenient for everyday urban driving in the UAE, especially if the car is used as a family vehicle. Given the CX-90’s length of just over five meters, the engineers managed the interior space well, ensuring both sufficient access to the third row and a high level of comfort in the second.

The rear seats of both Mazda models demonstrate how to maintain a balance between utility and convenience. In the CX-5, second-row passengers get enough space in the cabin, and the design of the seats allows them to easily withstand trips lasting 2-3 hours without discomfort. In the CX-90, the feeling is closer to business class – a deep cushion, wide legroom, moderate noise insulation and improved interior geometry. Even without folding tables and built-in displays, the CX-90’s rear row benefits from its simple but intelligent architecture.

Many manufacturers, focusing on the folding mechanism and access to the trunk, sacrifice not only the depth of the seat, but also the softness, back support and stability of the fit.

Mazda went the other way, especially in the older model. This is emphasized by the presence of additional space for the feet, and by maintaining individual adjustment of the seat position.

We must not forget about security. The Mazda CX-90 uses all the basic systems: 6 airbags, reinforced body structure, belts with pre-tensioners. Although the model does not claim to have ADAS level 2 systems, the very fact of increased attention to passive safety in the second row sets Mazda apart from competitors.

The comfort of the rear seat is not just a matter of comfort, it is a factor that affects fatigue, safety and the overall impression of the car. The Mazda CX-5 and especially the CX-90 confirm that even without flagship chips, you can make the ride comfortable. This is not only an engineering solution, but also respect for passengers who do not want to feel secondary in the car interior.
